Detail:
The quantity of folate must always be provided in mcg of folic acid equivalents, irrespective of the source ingredient(s) used. Factors for converting mcg of dietary folate equivalents (DFEs) to mcg of supplemental folate have not been formally established by Health Canada; however, the quantity of folate can be provided in DFEs as additional information on the label using conversion factors established by other regulatory agencies. The conversion factors established by the United States Food and Nutrition Board and as outlined in the Codex nutrient reference values are as follows: 1 DFE = 1 mcg food folate; 1 DFE = 0.6 mcg folic acid from fortified food or from a supplement consumed with food (factor of 1.7); and 1 DFE = 0.5 mcg folic acid from a supplement taken on an empty stomach (factor of 2).
