In order to reduce toxicity, the fruit of Xanthium sibiricum and the seeds of Prunus armeniaca must be processed before use as medicinal ingredients in Massa Medicata Fermentata: Xanthium sibiricum fruit must have the spines removed and be stir-baked. The skin of Prunus armeniaca seeds must be removed and the seeds stir-baked in order to break down amygdalin, a cyanogenic glycoside.

As this ingredient is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) ingredient, it may only be used in accordance with the conditions of use outlined in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) referenced texts (e.g. methods of preparations, source materials, doses, directions for use, durations of use, combinations of medicinal ingredients, risk statements, and the theory of TCM). Pinelliae Fermentata must be prepared according to the State Drug Standard (SDS) Banxia qu monograph WS3-B-1919-95 available at: http://www.pharmnet.com.cn/search/detail--32--6815.html (in Chinese). When submitting a Product Licence Application (PLA) form including Pinelliae Fermentata, all ingredients of Pinelliae Fermentata must be listed a source materials. Note that the source material Pinellia ternata tuber is the TCM pharmacopeial substance Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparatum cum Alumine which is processed with 8% Alumine. Also note that Pinelliae Fermentata includes the TCM pharmacopeial substance Alumen (Bai fan) which cannot be included as a source ingredient on the PLA form, but must nonetheless be included in Pinelliae Fermentata.
