Description:
Plant-based fixed oils or fats are simple lipids which are simple lipid composed of glycerol (1,2,3-trihydroxypropane) and triesters of fatty acids (triglycerides). The oil is characterized as hydrophobic (sometimes amphophilic), soluble in nonpolar or barely polar organic solvents, and non-volatile. Fixed oils and fats differ only in melting point: those that are liquid at ambient temperature are fixed oils; whereas those that are semisolid or solid at ambient temperature are known as fats. The oils/fats are extracted using organic solvents such as alcohol or hexane. The oil may be further refined.
