The isoquinoline structures are based on the tetrahydroisoquinoline nucleus, wich can be seen in simple compounds. Chemically, they are aromatic bases, with varying numbers of hydroxyl, methoxyl and methylenedioxy substituents. The majority of isoquinoline alkaloids are tetracyclic but a few are pentacyclic.
