These saponins are similar in structure, biogenesis and biological activity to the triterpenoid saponins (q.v.). They are based on a C27 spirostan structure, as in convallagenin A and, unlike the triterpenoid saponins, they lack any substituents at C-a in the left-hand ring. They resemble the triterpenoid saponins in the number and locationof the sugar components.
