Piper methysticum has been identified as an ingredient with potential health risks, consistent with its presence without conditions on the List of Prohibited and Restricted Cosmetic Ingredients (the Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist). Therefore, unauthorized products for sale in Canada which contain this ingredient are subject to compliance in conjunction with the Risk-Based Approach. NHPD accepts Product Licence Applications (PLAs) for products containing Piper methysticum provided that sufficient evidence for the safety, efficacy, and quality of the product is provided. The amount of kavalactones in Piper methysticum should be indicated on PLA forms, and human clinical data must be provided for safety assessment, unless: 1) the amount of kavalactones does not exceed 125 mg per dosage unit; and 2) the preparation does not contain, for its recommended daily dose, more than 250 mg of kavalactones; and 3) the product contains whole or peeled rhizome or an aqueous extract of the whole or peeled rhizome.
