Renseignements de base:
- L-arginine est considérée comme un acide aminé essentiel sous des conditions physiologiques particulières (IOM 2006).
- L-arginine joue un rôle dans la formation de facteurs physiologiques importants, tels que l'oxyde nitrique (ON, un vasodilatateur), l'urée (un produit excréteur), la créatine (requise pour le stockage de phosphates à haute énergie), toutes les protéines (pour leurs structures), et pour le relâchement des hormones de croissance (Shao et Hathcock 2008).
- Chez les adultes en santé consommant des quantités suffisantes de protéines, L-arginine est synthétisée en quantité suffisante pour satisfaire les besoins physiologiques. Un apport supplémentaire n'est nécessaire que chez les personnes souffrant de maladies particulières telles que des anomalies congénitales, et des états cataboliques (Shils et collab 2006; IOM 2005).
- L'énoncé « Pourrait aider à contribuer à une légère augmentation de la capacité à faire de l'exercice chez les individus atteints d'une maladie cardiovasculaire stable » est basé sur des études cliniques qui ont démontré qu'un apport supplémentaire en L-arginine chez les patients atteints de maladies cardiovasculaires (MCV) pouvait augmenter leur endurance lors d'exercice physique (capacité à l'exercice), ce qui correspond à un indicateur important de l'activité quotidienne (Doutreleau et collab 2010; Doutreleau et collab 2006; Nagaya et collab 2001; Bednarz et collab 2000; Ceremuzynski et collab 1997; Rector et collab 1996). L'énoncé est aussi basé sur le mécanisme d'action de L-arginine; les études cliniques ont démontré qu'un supplément de l'acide aminé augmente la vasodilatation dépendante de l'endothélium en augmentant la production d'oxyde nitrique (ON) chez les patients ayant un bas niveau d'ON (Lim et collab 2004; Palloshi et collab 2004; Bode-Böger et collab 2003; Lekakis et collab 2002; Sydow et collab 2002; Nagaya et collab 2001; Hambrecht et collab 2000; Lerman et collab 1998; Adams et collab 1997; Clarkson et collab 1996). Une augmentation de la production d'ON par l'apport de supplément de L-arginine pourrait être bénéfique en rétablissant la vasodilatation et en améliorant le métabolisme musculaire chez les patients atteints de maladies cardiovasculaires.
- La dose minimale pour l'énoncé « L-arginine est un acide aminé non essentiel qui contribue à la synthèse des protéines » représente 5% de l'apport moyen quotidien, i.e. 4,2 g par jour (IOM 2005).
- La dose maximale représente 10% de l'apport moyen quotidien et ne requière aucune durée d'utilisation.
