In oral rehydration products this ingredient is acceptable as a source of Sodium. Sodium is an electrolyte, not a nutrient. As a medicinal ingredient sodium does not contribute to the maintenance of good health since there is likely to be excess sodium from the diet, not a deficiency. The safety and efficacy of the sodium benzoate as a source of sodium must be assessed under the recommended conditions of use.
Acceptable daily intake up to 5 mg/kg body weight daily for benzoic acid, the benzoate salts (calcium, potassium and sodium), benzaldehyde, benzyl acetate, benzyl alcohol and benzyl benzoate, expressed as benzoic acid equivalents (JECFA 2001).
